My Philosophy of Education

I believe in an equitable education that focuses on the student as a whole, rather than solely focuses on the acquirement of basic skills. Society is changing and there is a shift in the amount of outside support that students are receiving. Many students learn about the world through secondary and oftentimes unreliable sources such as the media and their peers. I believe in promoting emotional intelligence in the classroom and enabling students to develop their own set of values as well as their own sense of self and worth. I believe that to do so would allow the students to create a solid foundation in their self knowledge.

I believe that in order for students to be academically successful they must first be turned on to learning. They must be motivated and eager to learn. In order to create this passion for learning, my role as a teacher is to provide material that is relevant to my students' lives, as well as to ensure that they material is interesting and interactive. I believe that there are many positive aspects of technology that may be employed in the classroom to create a stimulating learning environment.

I also firmly believe that in order to prepare students to become competent members of society, there are certain skills and knowledge that must be reintegrated into classroom learning. In the lower levels I believe that an emphasis should be placed on social/friendship making skills, anger and time management skills as well as communication skills. In the higher levels of education we must prepare our students to enter the post secondary world.  An emphasis should be placed on fostering independence with our students, as well as providing them with accurate knowledge and skills required to function in society, such as sex education, budgeting, life skill such as cooking and cleaning as well as how to prepare for the work force.

Moreover I believe in a democratic classroom that promotes equity for all. Each student is unique and comes with their own set of strengths and weaknesses, and with their own diverse experiences and needs. It is therefore imperative that I tailor my lessons, attitudes and teaching methods to ensure success for all students in my care.
